HopToDesk: free cross-platform remote desktop software

HopToDesk is a free remote desktop application for screen sharing, remote control, file transfer and live chat. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Chrome OS and Raspberry Pi. Traffic between peers is end-to-end encrypted, and the source code is publicly available. The software is free for personal and business use, without time limits.

Platforms and installation

Windows builds are available in 32-bit, 64-bit and ARM64 versions, and the software can be installed through the Microsoft Store, Chocolatey or as an MSIX package. Linux users can choose packages for Debian and Ubuntu, Fedora and openSUSE, and Manjaro, as well as FreeBSD, AppImage and Flatpak. Android users can install from Google Play or an APK file, and iOS users can install from the App Store. Raspberry Pi is supported in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

To connect, install and open HopToDesk on both devices, enter the ID of the remote device, then allow the connection or enter the password. On Android, remote control of the device with a mouse or touch requires enabling the Accessibility service for HopToDesk.

Connectivity

HopToDesk is designed to connect without changes to router or firewall settings. Tools such as Windows Remote Desktop and VNC typically require port forwarding or opened ports, which HopToDesk does not.

Dashboard for device and fleet management

The optional Dashboard adds real-time device monitoring and alerts, unattended access, session history with CSV export, and team roles, invitations and SSO. It also includes a built-in help desk with a customer ticket portal, where customers can submit tickets without an account. Support requests from email and the portal are assigned to team members. Additional capabilities include SLA targets, CSAT surveys, a full audit trail, multi-tenant sub-accounts for managed service providers, and deployment through GPO, Intune, SCCM, Jamf and Ansible.

Custom-branded clients can be generated from the Dashboard with preset connection and security settings, and a single installer can be rolled out across an organization. The Dashboard has a free tier that covers the first three devices, and the Business plan extends to 500 devices and beyond.

Security and data handling

All traffic, including screen sharing, chats and file transfers, is end-to-end encrypted, and HopToDesk states that it cannot see screens, files or other information exchanged during a session. Remote session content is not stored by HopToDesk. The free app and web client do not require an account. Dashboard accounts select a United States or European Union data region at sign-up, and existing accounts remain in the United States region, with migration to the EU available on request.

Licensing and cost

The free client has no time limits or usage caps for personal or business use. Payment applies only when using the Dashboard to manage a larger number of devices and team features.
